Mountain Bikes

Mountain bike is a general term for some very specific types of bike - freeride, off-road, downhill, slalom, trials or cross country. The heart of the bike is the frame and materials used range from steel, aluminium, carbon and latterly magnesium and may have optional front suspension, aka 'hardtail' or front and rear suspension aka 'full' or 'dual' suspension. Likened to a car, suspension keeps the wheels on the ground to increase traction and therefore control but also cushions the rider from the sudden impact of obstacles such as tree roots on a forest path or rocks on a mountain path. Technically, suspension makes the bike easier to control and reduces fatigue. Braking is achieved by one of 3 main methods, drum brakes, disc brakes ( hydraulic or mechanical - cable ) or the use of pads eg 'v' brakes, caliper or cantilever.[crnl][crnl]Mountain bikes are one of the most popular bikes sold by Factory Direct Bikes, and generally generally differ in price depending on the quality of frame material and components. However, Factory Direct bikes will always ensure great value for all our mountain bikes. Many mountain bikes now feature disc-brakes and a variety of gears for the most thorough and enjoyable riding experience. All mountain bikes sold at Factory Direct Bikes can be delivered throughout the UK. For any queries or assistance, please contact us and we'd be happy to help.[crnl]

BMX Bikes

BMX stands for Bicycle Moto Cross, a style of bike riding which involves all-terrain bikes riding over a dirt track with a variety of obstacles in the terrain (e.g. jumps). Therefore, BMX Bikes were developed to best suit these conditions, resulting in smaller and thus sturdier bikes frames, with wheels that are smaller with more spokes to provide extra strength. From the original Racing BMX bikes, which were built for speed, other varieties of BMX bicycles emerged, such as Freestyle BMX bikes, which focus on tricks, and Dirt BMX bikes, which bring this newer aspect to dirt tracks. As BMX bikes have no gears and are simple and strong in their design, they generally require less maintenance. At Factory Direct Bikes, we recommend adults generally use wheels sized 20". The 24in wheel BMX is purely for racing. All BMX bikes sold at Factory Direct Bikes can be delivered throughout the UK. For any queries or assistance, please contact us and we'd be happy to help.

Hybrid Bikes

Hybrid bikes generally combine the best features of Mountain bikes, Racing bikes and Touring bikes, to provide the best all-round riding experience for leisure, commuting and touring. The types of Hybrid bikes, such as Trekking Hybrid bikes and Urban Hybrid bikes, often place more emphasis on certain aspects of these features dependant on what the bikes primary purpose is. For example, Front Suspension Hybrid bikes focus more on the Mountain bike influence for all-terrain riding, whereas Sport Hybrid bikes pay more attention to the racing side of cycling. Factory Direct Bikes have a wide range of Hybrid bikes at great value, whatever the purpose. All hybrid bikes sold at Factory Direct Bikes can be delivered throughout the UK. For any queries or assistance, please contact us and we'd be happy to help.

Racing Bikes

Racing bikes are primarily built for speed on hard surfaces like roads, and thus are sometimes called road bikes. Factory Direct Bikes boasts many types of Racing bike for all riders of differing abilities, requirements and levels of competitiveness (if any!) ranging from Road Racing bikes to Cyclo-Cross Racing bikes to Fitness bikes. Some racing bikes are deliberately built to fit guidelines for races, such as those set by the UCI, or the ITU for Triathlon Racing bikes, and Factory Direct Bikes supplies quality bikes from top manufacturers such as Dawes, Merida and Claud Butler for these needs. All racing bikes sold at Factory Direct Bikes can be delivered throughout the UK. For any queries or assistance, please contact us and we’d be happy to help.

Touring Bikes

Factory Direct Bikes can boast a good selection of Touring Bikes, made up by product of the top brands Dawes and Claud Butler, at great value. Touring Bikes are designed for cycling long distances, and thus are prepared to tackle most obstacles, with sharp brakes for long descents and large gear selections for uphill struggles. Mudguards keep road spray off you, and racks front and rear provide the ability to carry all of what you need with you. These bikes come in a variety of styles and can be bought with upright seating positions like Mountain Bikes, or with a more streamlined design like Racing Bikes. All touring bikes sold at Factory Direct Bikes can be delivered throughout the UK. For any queries or assistance, please contact us and we’d be happy to help.

Electric Bikes

Electric bikes use an electric motor driven by a rechargeable battery pack to help you along. The motors can replace your pedalling or just assist it. E-bikes have a separate throttle on the handlebars, either a switch or a twist-grip and you decide how much help you get from the motor. In the future the law will be changed so that you must always be pedalling to get assistance from the motor. Pedelecs have a sensor on the pedals, and a little electronic brain measures how much effort you are putting in and can decide how much extra help to give you. Electric bikes are still bicycles, so have no road tax, no insurance, no MOT, no license plates, etc. To comply with this, they have to be limited to a maximum speed under power of 15mph (although you can pedal faster than this if you want, of course) and an average power of 200W (250W for an electric tricycle). At present in the UK, both E-bikes and Pedelecs are covered by this, although there are moves to make E-bikes conform to the same regulations as mopeds.

Trials Bikes

26in Wheels with wide tyres and rims, small frame size to allow for manoeuvrability, rigid forks. Usually running 7,8 or 9 gears with the chain guided over the front chainring so it cannot come off. May also with some form of guard to prevent damage to the chainring. Gear ratios are extremely low, since trials is about negotiating fixed solid obstacles, rocks, logs etc. Pure Trials bikes tend to be 20in wheeled, but many riders use 26in wheel bikes which have been made up from standard mountain bike parts with a few trials specific components to finish them off.

Slalom Bikes

26in Wheels with wide tyres, small frame size to allow for easy and fast turning, suspension forks. Usually running 7,8 or 9 gears, the chain being guided over the front chainring so it cannot come off. Gear ratios generally high, as most slalom bikes are used on grass or dirt descents weaving through a sequence of posts in much the same way that a slalom skier does.

Folding Bikes

Folding bikes are easier to store and transport than normal bikes. You can fold them up to put them in the back of a car, store them in a closet, and take them by train or bus. A sub-class of folding bikes is the separables. These don't actually fold, they disassemble into several pieces. Bikes designed for short journeys - they fold very well but don?t feel quite like full-size bikes. Good for commuting - cycle to train station or bus stop, quickly fold them up, and store behind your seat or in a luggage rack. Bikes for longer distance riding usually have lots of luggage-carrying space, and ride like a full-size bike. Ride all day - perfect for commuting longer distances or touring. They don't fold so quickly or small, but are still more compact and easy to store than a full-size bike.

Cruiser Bikes

A cruiser bicycle, also known as a beach cruiser, is a bicycle which combines balloon tyres, an upright seating posture and usually a single-speed drivetrain. It is of straightforward steel construction with expressive styling. Cruisers are popular amongst casual cyclists and holiday makers because they are very stable and easy to ride.
